Wells Lake Trail is a simple loop trail that circles Wells Lake at the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center, near Fort Smith, Arkansas. It is an easy and pleasant .7-mile walk. If you are or know a skateboarder in the Fort Smith area, you might want to check out the skate park at Martin Luther King Park on the north end of town. MLK has the only skate park in the Fort Smith area. MLK Park also has a 1/3-mile walking trail, soccer fields, a playground, and a “sprayground” (a summer water splash area). I think the prettiest walk in Fort Smith is the River Walk at the Fort Smith National Historic Site. The Historic Site park, operated by the National Park Service, is on the site of the original military Fort Smith (1817-1824) and the second Fort Smith (1838-1871). The military barracks building of the second Fort was turned into a federal court building used by Judge Isaac C. Parker, sometimes referred to today as the “Hanging Judge,” from 1875 to 1889. The Ben Geren Fitness Course, located in the center of Fort Smith’s Ben Geren Park, is a loop walking trail with a variety of “fitness stations” (e.g., parallel bars) to help you stay in shape. At 1.5 miles, the trail is a nice length for an urban park walking trail. The Ben Geren Bike Trail is a nice walking path. This paved path in Fort Smith, Arkansas, is 1.9 miles long (each way) and connects Ben Geren Park to the nearby Chaffee Crossing area. |
