King’s Bluff Loop Trail

King's Bluff Falls, Ozark National Forest

A few weeks ago, I headed to the King’s Bluff Loop Trail in the Ozark National Forest, about 45 miles northeast of Clarksville. I didn’t get there until around 2:30 p.m. I figured I should have enough time before dark to hike the King’s Bluff Loop Trail and the adjacent Pedestal Rocks Loop Trail. Neither is a long trail.

It turned out that I didn’t have time to do both. I ended up spending over an hour at King’s Bluff Falls because it’s just so awesome.

Hobbs – Van Winkle, Sinking Stream, Multi-Use Diversity Trails 2011-03-26

[This post was originally published on March 31, 2011 on "A Hiking We Will Go."]

This past weekend, we opted for some easier hikes. With cold gray skies overhead and the looming threat of rain, I didn’t want to get too far from my blanket.

I had wanted to check out the Historic Van Winkle Trail at Hobbs State Park, near Rogers, Arkansas, since I had watched a segment about the trail on AETN’s Exploring Arkansas. The trail is very easy and is more interesting for its historical information than for its hiking challenge.

Stuart’s comment was “that was a trail for little girls.” However, after the marathon backpacking challenge from a few weeks ago, that was the perfect level for me.

The Dogwood Overlook Trail is at the Dam Site Lake Park on Beaver Lake, close to Eureka Springs in northwest Arkansas. The hiking trail is only two miles long, but it is a steep two miles and a little more difficult than the length would indicate. We headed out with the dogs today to check it out.

It was a perfect spring day, with blue skies and just a few clouds here and there. Because it was such a short hike, I opted to go without my backpack, thinking we would not be out very long.

The trailhead is at the overlook by Beaver Dam. There is a long flight of stairs going straight up. Buster was headed up the stairs full steam while Katie was resistant to climbing any of the stairs.

April 16-24, 2011 is National Parks Week, and in celebration, the fees at Pea Ridge National Military Park in Pea Ridge, Arkansas are waived. We took advantage of the freebie and the absolutely beautiful day to check out a little more of the hiking trails in the park.

imagePea Ridge has an 8.7 mile hiking trail, but there are several loops that can be taken to make a shorter hike.

We got there about 11 and weren’t really prepared for a hike quite that long, so we opted to hike a loop that starts at Elk Horn Tavern and passes the Clemens House site and the Williams Hollow Hospital site.

View from Sunset Shelter on White Rock Mountain Rim Trail

The White Rock Mountain Rim Trail is one of the prettiest trails I have been on.

White Rock Mountain is in the Ozark National Forest in Franklin County, about 20 miles north of Mulberry. This is a pretty easy 1.9-mile loop trail, and it has gorgeous views of the Ozark Mountains on almost the entire trail.

But don’t walk it with young kids or anyone who may have trouble with balance or with being cautious around cliffs.
