Hobbs – Van Winkle, Sinking Stream, Multi-Use Diversity Trails 2011-03-26

[This post was originally published on March 31, 2011 on "A Hiking We Will Go."]

This past weekend, we opted for some easier hikes. With cold gray skies overhead and the looming threat of rain, I didn’t want to get too far from my blanket.

I had wanted to check out the Historic Van Winkle Trail at Hobbs State Park, near Rogers, Arkansas, since I had watched a segment about the trail on AETN’s Exploring Arkansas. The trail is very easy and is more interesting for its historical information than for its hiking challenge.

Stuart’s comment was “that was a trail for little girls.” However, after the marathon backpacking challenge from a few weeks ago, that was the perfect level for me.

Back in mid-September, my girlfriend and I went to the Oxley Nature Center in Tulsa’s Mohawk Park. (Mohawk Park is also home to the Tulsa Zoo.)

The authors of Oklahoma Hiking Trails, Kent F. Frates and Larry Floyd, say that the east part of the Ouachita National Forest’s Billy Creek Trail is not recommended because it is “uninteresting” and “does not meet any real hiking criteria.”

I disagree with that view. I think skipping the east branch of the trail would mean missing much of the best scenery.

Mesa Loop Trail - Roman Nose State Park

View of Roman Nose Canyon from Inspiration Point on Mesa Loop Trail

I recently visited Roman Nose State Park, near Watonga, Oklahoma. The brownish-red canyons and mesas in this semi-arid region of west Oklahoma are very different from the scenery of east Oklahoma or that of west Arkansas. It was a pretty cool trip.
